"People come to Kenya to see animals. You are going to meet people".

With these words Luis Carlos welcomed the group of GAM volunteers last August when we arrived in the town of Tuum, just two days after landing in Nairobi. And yes, most tourists who visit Kenya every year return home with images of the vast African savannah dotted with wildlife in a setting of astonishing beauty. GAM volunteers, during the days we spent in Kenya, also saw amazing animals and marvelled at the African landscapes. But we were fortunate to bring back home much more enriching images: local people, men, women, elders, young people and children eager to meet us and share with us chai tea, freshly baked bread, games, chats in the shade of an acacia tree, dances, songs… People eager to get to know GAM closely, grateful and excited about our visit.

The experience was, at times, overwhelming. But always rich in surprises and life lessons. Beyond the poverty, severe water shortages, lack of electricity or poor hygiene conditions, we met people living a promising present and looking to the future with hope thanks to GAM: Elisabeth and her companions in Tuum; Ann in Nonkek and Josephine in Lpus; Irene, a Samburu girl who helps with projects in Lodung'okwe; the many users of the welcoming and picturesque Barsaloi leadership training centre.... They all showed us that GAM's collaboration makes a difference in communities eager to improve their living conditions and move forward for a better future. A great example of life and a sample of all the good that GAM does (and will continue to do) thanks to the generous collaboration of its benefactors.

Other GAM news

The GAM Annual Dinner will take place on 18 November at 19h30. It will be an opportunity to hear the testimonies of the volunteers who travelled to Kenya in August, but also to learn about GAM's projects in 2024, and the various ways in which we can support them and enable us to reach out, through them, to our beneficiaries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
