Support for members of communities involved in the transformation of society: Literacy courses

• Location: Lare
• Year: 2009
• Objectives: Promote the training and participation of women from communities committed to the transformation of society. The women of Lare took courses in literacy, general hygiene and various workshops. All this to guarantee them a more active role in their traditional society by:
  • Scheduling literacy classes for women who could neither read nor write.
  • Providing women's groups with books and educational materials.
  • Organizing training workshops in environmental hygiene and first aid for groups of women.
  • Forming a group of women – counselors – psychologists to help in cases of abuse of women's rights.
  • Translting and publication of training programs in the Nuer language so that women can use them.
  • Equipping women's groups in different communities with symbolic clothing. This consolidated the identity of the group and reinforced the belonging to this identity.
• GAM asbl decided to finance their literacy and symbolic outfits to which they were attached because they reinforce their cohesion and their unity of action in the social environment.
